Gloriously long and warm summer days are finally here! And we’re celebrating by taking Yoga out of the studio and embracing all that an outdoor yoga practice has to offer – even if you’re an urban yogi like me.
As a Yogaia teacher, I have been surprised at the many live interactions with students who are joining live classes with their mat rolled out somewhere tropical and sunny. But if, like me, you’re not immediately surrounded by countryside, sandy beaches, or a lovely patch of garden filled with beautiful flowers, then you have to make use of what you’ve got. The reality of your outdoor yoga practice may involve the humdrum of the city sirens, lots of grey looking buildings. Maybe the only green you can see is from the collection of cacti you recently bought off the internet.
It’s time to get creative
That’s why taking yoga outdoor means getting a little more creative and adventurous with your surroundings, and taking the time to create a little, sacred space that offers that some much-needed Zen. So while I have not been blessed with a garden (even a living room for that matter!), my outdoor home practice is usually up on my sunny London rooftop.
To say I have a beautiful panoramic view of London would be a lie. However, I can just about make out The Shard and The Cucumber, which to my visiting friends is apparently still pretty cool!
Watch a sneak peek into my sunny(ish) and very windy outdoor home yoga space – the rooftop of my London flat.
I enjoy getting outside first thing in the morning where I put out my plants, meditation cushion and have a strong coffee next to my mat. It’s nothing too exotic, but I cherish it because it’s mine, tucked away amongst the hustle and bustle of the urban jungle.
We are so lucky that Yoga is a versatile, free roaming practice we can take anywhere. And with the amazing variety of classes and teachers that Yogaia as to offer, interactive and guided yoga classes are always right at your fingertips. Whether you’re joining classes from your laptop or smartphone, you can literally take your favourite yoga classes with your favourite teacher with you everywhere you go! If you haven’t already, make sure to download the Yogaia App!
So I encourage you to roll your mat out somewhere different and sunny this week – country bumpkins and city slickers alike.
